Location description
This neighbourhood, delimited by Paseo de la Castellana, Retiro Park, María de Molina and Francisco Silvela streets, is one of the few in Madrid with a well-defined urban structure in blocks - apples - in a structure of perpendicular streets. The Salamanca district has traditionally been considered an upper class neighborhood and is the most sought after by locals or long term visitors, without however being a typical tourist neighborhood. Indeed, many of the city's most luxurious shops are located in this area. The most important streets are Serrano, Velázquez, Goya and Príncipe de Vergara. Serrano street begins at the Plaza de Independencia, where you can find the famous Puerta de Alcalá, designed by Carlos III, and the entrance of the Retiro, an emblematic and representative monument of the city. In this area there are still some 19th century mansions. Serrano Street, one of the most famous avenues in Madrid because of the high standard of housing and offices found there, and because it is the place where the most exclusive shops are located. Luxury shopping centres, or high standing cafes and restaurants are what you will find in the surroundings. It is undoubtedly known as the best residential area in Madrid. It is very well connected to the historical centre, by metro and bus, and within walking distance of the most important places and museums, but it offers a much quieter and more relaxed atmosphere, although that does not mean it is a boring place...not at all! In fact, it is an excellent place to enjoy a pleasant walk, shop in the most exclusive boutiques or eat in a good restaurant.
